Because gemstones act as a source of mana, and can empower a spell, they can be used as tools to help in the learning of magic.
Gemstones form in three main ways.
Naturally from sunlight fitering through magic regions.
When a living creature dies, the remaining mana in it's body turns into a gemstone.
